Background of EU REACH

Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) is the EU's regulation for the preventive management of all chemical substances entering its market. REACH establishes procedures for the collection and evaluation of information on the characteristics and hazards of chemical substances, with the aim of enhancing the protection of the environment and human health. The EU REACH regulations came into effect on June 2007 and began to be implemented on June 2008. The EU REACH regulations require companies to register with the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) for chemicals with an annual production or import volume over 1 ton. Registration applies to substances on their own, substances in preparations (also called "mixtures"), and certain cases of substances in articles.
